Roland Garros - Early Exit For Coria & Others

He’s highly anticipated return to the scene took him to the peak of his career four years ago, was short lived. Guillermo CORIA couldn’t capitalize after a great start when he took on Spaniard Tommy ROBREDO in his first round match up. He stunned the 12th seeded player 7-5 in the first set. But the ROBREDO bounced back to win the game 6-4, 6-1 & 6-4 in the following three sets.
I’m just hoping that this could be a great comeback for El Mago after being out in the cold during last few years.

CORIA’s exit proves to be start of what was a disappointing day for all our boys. The most obvious being Guillermo CANAS after his surprise defeat to American Wayne ODESNIK in straight sets, 6-7, 6-7 & 6-7.

The other player who went out is Sergio ROITMAN, who went down to Guillermo Garcia-LOPEZ of Spain, 6-2, 6-4 & 7-6.

Hi John. It was good to see Coria play a nice competitive match. Hopefully, he can make a comeback. That Canas loss was a big shock to me; I thought he was going to possibly make a dent in the tournament. He really seems to have taken a step back in the past year.

I have a question for you: Do you know if Gaudio retired? I know he was talking about taking a break.

Thanks for your comment Van!!!

I'm not too sure about GAUDIO whereabout these days. I guess maybe you're correct that he is taking a break.

Like CORIA, he too fail to follow that great success he had in 2004.

Anyway disappointment, this time from 13th seed Juan MONACO. He went out to Robin SODERLING of Sweden 2-6, 3-6 & 1-6.

To tell the truth, I think the heyday of Coria (and Gaudio as well) is over. Maybe not physically, but I don't know if Coria is really where he needs to be mentally. Which is very sad, really, because they were both such great claycourters... but Rafa has dominated so totally I think it is psychologically very hard for them.

The future of Argentinian tennis, though, is bright. My tip for the future is Eduardo Schwank. He just won three Challengers in a row (Cremona, Rome and Bordeaux) and took out Carlos Moya in the first round at Roland Garros. He's one to keep an eye on...
